From Tehran to Muscat

Carpets have been this workshop’s whole career.

Rug Road is led by Hossein Gorji, a restorer who has spent his working life in the Persian carpet trade — first in Iran, restoring antique carpets for export to Europe and running a workshop of 130 people, and now in Muscat, where the rugs that come through his hands belong to museums, palaces and private collectors.

Iran

Learning the craft, and teaching it

  • Restored antique Persian carpets for export to European markets, and performed the final quality check on pieces leaving for the EU.
  • Supervised 130 staff across large-scale carpet restoration and repair, and directed operations and staff performance.
  • Specialised in the hardest part of the craft — dyeing, re-dyeing, stain removal and the washing of delicate rugs.
  • Diagnosed and restored high-value pieces from Tabriz, Kashan and Qom.
  • Built training programmes in advanced dyeing and restoration. Several of the people trained there are still working in the industry today.
  • Managed supply, sales and marketing for domestic and international clients, building a trusted name for Persian handwoven carpets in Tehran and abroad.

Oman

Running the workshop

  • Moved to Oman to manage operations for the country’s largest carpet cleaning and restoration service.
  • Oversees cleaning, repair and restoration for royal palaces, museums and private collectors.
  • Leads a team of 18, coordinating cleaning, repair, invoicing and delivery.
  • Handles procurement, budgets and invoice approvals, and trains staff to hold the standard.

Restoration of the world’s third-largest carpet.

Beit Greiza Museum

Led the restoration of more than 60 antique carpets.

Directed restoration work on the antique collection.

Diagnosed before it is touched

A rug is assessed first — foundation, dyes, previous repairs — because the wrong wash or the wrong thread does damage that cannot be undone.

Colour matched, not guessed

Dyeing and re-dyeing were this workshop’s speciality long before it was a business. Ivory grounds are matched across several tones, not one.

Museum-grade, at any size

The same standard applied to a national collection is applied to a rug from your living room.
