Burn Hole Reweaving on a Silk Persian Rug

An ember had burned clean through the pile and into the foundation of this rug, leaving a charred crater in the middle of the medallion — the single hardest place on a rug to hide a repair, because the eye goes straight there.

The damage

Heat had melted the silk pile down to a hard, brittle crust and scorched the warp and weft underneath. Around the rim the surviving fibres were discoloured and weak, so the damage was wider than the hole itself.

What we did

We cut the charred material back to sound fibre, which always means removing a little more than the visible burn. The warp and weft were rebuilt across the gap to restore the foundation, then the pile was reknotted knot by knot in silk dyed to match, following the medallion’s scrollwork through the repair so the drawing stays continuous. The new pile was clipped level with the old and burnished.

The pattern runs unbroken through what was the hole. At standing height the repair is not findable.
