Silk Rug Fringe and Selvedge Restoration

A fine green silk rug came into our Muscat workshop with its fringe felted into clumps and one corner of the side binding gone completely. Neither is decorative. The fringe is the rug’s warp, and the selvedge is what stops the edge unravelling, so once either fails the rug starts shedding knots.

The damage

The fringe had matted into stiff clumps and lost length, and several warp ends had pulled free of the foundation altogether. At the corner the selvedge had unravelled down to bare warps, and the ivory end band was fraying where its binding had given way.

What we did

We released the fringe and washed it, working each clump apart by hand rather than cutting, then re-anchored the loose warp ends back into the foundation. The corner selvedge was rebuilt with matched silk overcasting worked at the original tension and density, the ivory end band re-stitched, and the fringe finally combed straight and trimmed to one even length.

The edge is structurally sound again and will hold. The fringe is full and even, and the end band reads continuous across the width.
