Reweaving Worn Pile on an Ivory Field

Wear on an ivory ground is the least forgiving repair there is. A dark field hides a slight mismatch; an ivory one puts it under a spotlight, and ivory is never one colour — it shifts across the rug as the original wool took the dye.

The damage

A patch of the field had worn down to the foundation, with the surrounding pile thinned and the drawing broken across the middle of a flower. Basting threads had been run through the area to stop it spreading.

What we did

We cleared the damaged remnants and rebuilt the foundation where it had gone, then reknotted the area following the original floral drawing so the stems and petals join up correctly at every edge of the repair. The ivory ground was matched across several tones rather than one, then the new pile was clipped down to the height of the pile around it.

The motif is continuous and the repaired patch sits at the same height and sheen as the field around it.
